Get to know Nancy:
The Honourable Nancy J. Hartling, ONB
Senator for New Brunswick
Nancy J. Hartling was appointed to the Senate as an independent
Senator for New Brunswick in November 2016. With a career focused
on families and social issues, she is well versed on mental health,
poverty, violence against women, and affordable housing. She has
advocated extensively for socio-economic issues facing families,
particularly single parents and their children. Senator Hartling is a
dedicated proponent of social justice and human rights, and is an
advocate for issues relating to mental health.
• Senator Hartling is a member of the Independent Senators Group, and sits on the Standing Senate Committee on Human Rights, as well as the Standing Senate Committee on Fisheries and Oceans.
• She obtained a Masters of Adult Education from St. Francis Xavier University, and was a registered social worker with over 30 years of experience. She has lectured at the University of New Brunswick.
• She was the founder and Executive Director of the not-for-profit organization Support to Single Parents Inc., and was a founding member of St. James Court Inc., an affordable housing complex for single parents.
• She was co-chair of the Provincial Minister’s Working Group on Violence Against Women, served on the board of the Muriel McQueen Fergusson Centre for Family Violence Research, and was the New Brunswick co-chair for the Women’s World March 2000.
• Senator Hartling is actively engaged in the modernization of the Senate Harassment Policy and sponsored Government Bill C-65: An Act to amend the Canada Labour Code (harassment and violence) in 2018, which extended protections and established a framework for reporting harassment in federally regulated workplaces.
• Senator Hartling is a Member of the Order of New Brunswick, and received the Governor General’s Award in Commemoration of the Persons Case for her community service.
